Reflective Webinars: Fundamentals of Statistics (part 1) and Introduction to AI and Machine Learning
New this week -- two reflective webinars touching on data-related topics in public health:
Fundamentals of Statistics (part 1)
Fundamental to the science of statistics is the ability to recognize a true effect, if it exists. Valid studies require results based on data that are unbiased and reliable. We demonstrate the role statistics plays to minimize these errors, and in so doing, enhance the credibility of a study’s findings.
Introduction to AI and Machine Learning
This introductory lecture is a primer to get you familiar with the fundamental concepts of AI as they relate to health data.
- Framing of analytic approaches applied to Big Data
- Key aspects of AI / ML - what are the distinguishing features?
- Examples and applications
PHESC's reflective webinar series aims to move public health professionals toward a more reflective/reflexive practice. This offering includes questions to consider before watching the video, the ~60 minute video itself, as well as questions to reflect on after viewing the content. A certificate of completion will be generated upon submitting your post-webinar reflection. Finally, we'll reach out in three months to see how these reflections have impacted your practice. The purpose of these exercises is to help you pause, reflect and engage with the content. See our full listings for other topics in the series.

New Podcast: Race, Health, and Happiness
Dr. Onye Nnorom's new podcast, Race, Health and Happiness, is "...not a podcast where we start explaining racism and if there is any in Canada. The assumption is that the listener understands that. This podcast is like course 201. Now, we think about staying well, thriving and finding joy. Center stage is the Black, Indigenous People of Color experience. It’s an opportunity to understand how groups have thrived and survived systemic racism. At its core, it’s how we overcome and enjoy despite life challenges."
Nnorom is a physician and Assistant Professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Family and Community Medicine.
