National Collaborating Centre for Determinants of Health -  Webinar: Living Health Equity Values within Public Health Organizations

17 July 2019, 2:00pm - 3:00pm EDT

Personal and societal values guide organizational work on the social determinants of health and health equity. This webinar will review the organizational values that reflect an equity orientation. It will explore how organizations can successfully shift their values to more closely align with those supportive of health equity action. Shifting organizational culture depends on a close alignment between the personal values of staff members and the desired values of the organization.

Each individual working at an organization arrives with a set of values that has varying degrees of overlap with other staff members and that helps shape the organization's value system. However, not all individuals influence the organization's values to the same extent. The leaders of an organization play a key role in sustaining and reinforcing values within their organization. An organization's values can, in turn, support or detract from health equity action when they influence the goals and priorities of policies and practices.

In short, the sociopolitical context of an organization is critical in directing its ethical commitments. This webinar will review strategies for assessing and shifting organizational values to support health equity action.

Participants will learn about

  • the values that reflect health equity;
  • how to assess the values inherent in existing organizational policies and practices; and
  • strategies for shifting organizational values to support health equity action.

Article (USA) - Enhancing Communities of Practice: Using Project ECHO to Deepen Skill-Building for the Public Health Workforce

The National Coordinating Center for Public Health Training (NCCPHT) at the National Network of Public Health Institutes (NNPHI) utilizes an Applied Learning Collaborative (ALC) model to deepen strategic public health skills and build expertise to address complex issues. Building on the theories of Communities of Practice—defined as “a group of people who share a concern, a set of problems, or a passion about a topic, and who deepen their knowledge and expertise through ongoing interactions”—ALCs are effective vehicles for building practical skills, creating momentum and greater reach in an area of interest or movement, and fostering the collective development of strategies and solutions.

The NCCPHT is expanding its ALC approach to include the Project ECHO® framework. The Hurricane Response Hub collaborative—a coordinated effort to address hurricane-related health recovery in five jurisdictions affected by the 2017 hurricanes—recently became one of nearly 300 Project ECHO hubs currently operating across the globe. Project ECHO was initially created to support medical education, but is being adapted by other fields, including education and law enforcement.
