PHESC is addressing three OPHS Foundational Standards: Population Health Assessment, Effective Public Health Practice, and Health Equity (which also underpins the other two). All eight PHESC partners have been hard at work developing and updating resources and training offerings for Ontario's public health staff. We'll announce final dates and registration details (where relevant) as soon as we have them, but here are a few highlights of what's coming:

Population Health Assessment

Among other things...

  • The Dalla Lana School of Public Health is adapting and updating some of the Skills Online materials (in English and French) into new online course content for both epidemiologists and non-epidemiologists. We're consulting with the Association of Public Health Epidemiologists of Ontario to ensure the content will be relevant and practical.
  • Using health equity indicators was another theme of interest. The Alliance for Healthier Communities is developing a training entitled Using Data to Advance Health Equity: Leading Practices from Community Health, which will run in the new year.

Effective Public Health Practice

Among other things...

  • The National Collaborating Centre for Healthy Public Policy will be taking their Public Health Ethics work to several public health units. They're also developing training materials on Health Impact Assessment (HIA).
  • On the topic of Health Equity Impact Assessment (HEIA), the Wellesley Institute and Public Health Ontario are contributing material for online and in-person trainings.
  • There will be a number of offerings on Evidence-Informed Decision Making and Knowledge Translation using resources (in English and French) from the National Collaborating Centre on Methods and Tools.
  • The Alliance for Healthier Communities and Public Health Ontario are constructing a series of three trainings addressing different practical aspects of embedding equity in public health practice. The Ontario Public Health Association will add information on collaborative leadership in practice.

Health Equity

Among other things...

  • Keep your calendar open! There will be a series of webinars and workshops from the National Collaborating Centre for Determinants of Health beginning in mid-January. They will cover various topics under the general heading of Public Health Roles for Health Equity Action. Their PHESC activities will also be listed on their new webpage.
  • There has also been a lot of interest in the Indigenous-specific cultural safety topic. A short video from the Dalla Lana School of Public Health is being created to introduce participants to a series of six short online courses from Cancer Care Ontario. The courses will be prerequisites for a series of four webinars tentatively scheduled for Fridays through February and March, as well as an online talking circle.
