Workshop ($): Engaged Planning, Action Research and Evaluation: Tools and Concepts to Design and Facilitate Impactful Change

October 31, November 1, 4 & 5
Friends House, Toronto, ON

This course engages you in hands-on work with tools and concepts for people and evidence-based learning for social change. It is dedicated to advancing professional capacities to design and facilitate authentic dialogue and sound inquiry among people committed to making a difference.

In a complex world, decision-making needs to be continuously informed by multiple perspectives, and particularly by the people most affected. This means learning to work "with" people and not "for" or "on" them. Engaging people and mobilizing knowledge for informed action is a direct path to the development of better services, policies, programs and projects. Joins us on this journey.

The 4.5 day agenda is organized into two separate modules that can be taken alone or in combination.

Just Societies: Health Equity and Dignified Lives - Report of the Commission of the Pan American Health Organization on Equity and Health Inequalities in the Americas

In the last decades, health in the Region of the Americas has improved dramatically, yet many people are being left behind. PAHO has established the Commission on Equity and Health Inequalities in the Americas to analyze the impact of drivers influencing health, while proposing actions to improve inequalities in health. According to the evidence presented in this report, much of ill health is socially determined. Factors such as socioeconomic position, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability status, being a migrant—alone or in combination—can contribute to marked inequalities in health on life. Furthermore, the impact of daily life conditions shows that the effect of inequalities is seen at the start of life. The report provides examples of successful policies, programs, and actions implemented in countries and presents 12 recommendations to achieve health equity, calling for coordinated actions among local and national governments, transnational organizations, and civil society to jointly address the social determinants of health.
