With release of the 2018 Ontario Public Health Foundational Standards related to Health Equity, Population Health Assessment and Effective Public Health Practice, PHESC was created to better equip public health units with the resources and skills needed to implement, count, and champion these standards.
Funded by a two-year Health and Wellbeing grant from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the PHESC Collaborative is made up of eight partner organizations who are working together to deliver a comprehensive, evidence-informed training plan for Ontario’s public health workforce, fully integrating a health equity approach.
As a collaborative, PHESC’s partners leverage their networks, knowledge, and expertise for greater impact. Collectively, we are developing a collection of offerings that adapt existing resources to local contexts and ensure the sustainability of training tools and resources beyond the life of the grant. In a unique approach, we have worked together to ensure equity is a cross-cutting theme throughout all training offerings, rather than an isolated topic.
Training is accessible to public health staff across the province online and through workshops in a variety of locations. An online learning management system has been created to catalogue and organize the trainings and resources so that learners can access the content on the schedule that works for them. Some resources and courses will be offered in both English and French. Learning pathways have been created to guide learners when choosing and participating in trainings to ensure they are engaging with material that will assist them with achieving their own professional goals and objectives.
PHESC’s explicit focus on health equity is intended to contribute to equitable systems change. To support this, training opportunities are tailored for all levels of the public health workforce: front line, middle management, senior leadership, and Boards of Health.
